Home School Community Liaison

Family Learning: Cookery
Margaret Curran is the Home School Community Liaison Co-ordinator/teacher in St. Joseph’s Primary School. She works with parents, teachers, pupils, and local and statutory agencies to support the education of all our pupils and particularly children who may be experiencing educational or other disadvantage. She promotes family learning through in-class programmes where parents and children come together to work in an enjoyable atmosphere. Courses and classes are organised for parents and Home Visits provide confidential support to our families. Contact number: 087-7602734.

  • Courses for Parents 2017-2018 
  • Storysack-making every Tuesday morning 9-11 in St Mary's Primary School Parents' Room. Newcomers are welcome.
  • Family Communicationsf-Esteem Course starting Tuesday October 24th 9:30-12:00 in St Joseph's Parents' Room-open to all parents of 6th Class pupils.
  • Parents are taking part in the New Parenting Plus Programme beginning November 6th,10-12:30 very helpful to parents in helping to manage children's behaviour and in building warm connected relationships with children. More places are available. If you wish to put your name down for this course  contact Margaret on 0877602734.
  • Digital Skills for Citizens starting Thursday November 9th, 9-11am, and run over 5 Thursday mornings. 
  • Happy Easter to all our pupils ,parents and their families and to our Erasmus Plus friends!
  • This term's Art & Craft Course entitled 'Tile Painting' is due to finish on April 7th. Parents have produced a wonderful art piece for our Erasmus+ Project,"On a journey with the ARTist". It is inclusive of all 6 participating EU countries; Spain, Belgium, Romania,Finland,Greece and Ireland. Thanks to tutor, Tamsin Jay for her guidance in this project which will be on display in the school after Easter.
  • Parents are booking places on the upcoming First Aid/ Cardiac First Response Course taking place in Term 3. Contact Margaret if you would like to do this course,(0877602734)
  • Digital Skills for Citizens Course- a five day course on the basics of internet usage with computers, iPads ,smart phones etc. was completed by eight parents on April 3rd. Certification will be provided by the Irish Computer Society in due course. A second course will run after Easter. Contact Margaret on 0877602734 if you would like to book a place on it.

  • 2016 Latest News:
  •   'Painting on Glass' course finished in December when all classes were treated to a lovely exhibition in the Parents' Room of pieces produced.The Christmas theme was admired by the pupils and parents gave a great insight into the skills used to create the exhibition. 
  • We are delighted to have our Family Learning Cookery Programme running again this term, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Waterford Area Partnership.Parents and children are learning together new easy to use recipes which can be used at home, as well as learning about healthy eating ,kitchen Safety and Hygiene and also tackling obesity trends in today's children. We look forward to learning weekly with Lena Moran ,our resident chef!
  • This term's Art & Craft Course entitled 'Painting on Glass' is full and  running well with tutor Tamsin Jay. Beautiful Hallow'een pieces were produced by parents and participants are now working with a Christmas theme.

  • Free English Classes have now finished for this school year and will return again to the Parents'Room in January. Our thanks to Kathleen Condon and Áine Whelan from Community Education for providing the classes.  If you know of any parent struggling with or wanting to improve their standard of English please encourage them to participate on a Wednesday Morning at 10 0' clock. Nine parents found the classes very helpful this year and new parents are especially welcome to join in the new year.
  • The Advanced Pottery Class for parents finished on June 24th. Beautiful pieces have been produced most notably the Clay Tile in Relief entitled The Butterfly Lion created for the One Book One Community Project and is on display in St Mary's Primary School Parents' Room. Thanks to Elaine Bending and Áine Whelan from Community Education for providing the classes.
  • The second Basic First Aid Course for Parents which also included certification for Cardiac First Response from the Irish Hospitals Emergency Care Group finished June 8th. 15 parents have achieved certification so well done to all. We will all feel safer in our school community as a result of your participation. Thanks to Aisling Hayes, course tutor.
  • The school's Reading Buddy Programme is running in Term 3 and we welcome four new volunteer Buddies  to our programme this year, Siobháin O Connell, Helen Beresford,Helen Culloo and Claire Meehan Also Ann Ryan and Roisín Meehan are most welcome back! We are hoping to expand the scheme in the new school year to run in terms 1 and 2 also.
  • Maths for Fun was run with Ms Enright's 2nd Class is starting on May 20th. Thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to help out!
  • Maths for Fun was run with Ms Coward's 4th Class for the first time finishing in April and proved very popular with pupils parents and grandparents. Thanks to everyone who helped out.
  • Parents took part in the Stop Food Waste Challenge in April run by Ella Ryan from  Waterford County Council and were shown the school's composting facility by members of the school's Green School's Committee. Thanks to Ella for all the great tips she gave to our parents who found the course really enjoyable.
  • Our Parenting Plus Children's Programme Course finished in January.Well done to all the parents who participated and who have found it a great support in their family life. A new course is being planned for September- contact Margaret on 0877602734 if you would like to join it.
  • One Book One Community Project was a great success with Mrs Grant's 6th Class participating with the whole school community, reading the book The Butterfly Lion by Michael Murporgo. Thank you to our  parents who participated in the project by making activity packs, coming to the Class book reading sessions,running the quiz and attending the end of project awards ceremony. Thanks also to the Parents' Pottery Class for creating a beautiful tile wall-hanging inspired by the book.A true community effort enjoyed by all!
  • Maths for Fun was run with Mrs Grant's 6th Class before Christmas for the first time in the school. The boys were brilliant and enjoyed the new maths activities and were delighted with all the adults who took the time to come in and support them in the programme .Well done and thanks!

  • This year we are expanding the Maths for Fun Programme to two more classes . We will be looking for parent/grandparent volunteers to help with 6th Class Maths for Fun in the first term.4th and 2nd classes will have it in 2016!
